Amsterdam’s Chief Rabbi sacked

By  •  Global news

FURY erupted among young Jewish Amsterdammers this week after Aryeh Ralbag, the city’s nominal Chief Rabbi, signed a statement saying that homosexuality was “sinful” and could be “cured”.

And today it is reported here that the homophobe has been sacked by Amsterdam’s Orthodox Jewish community.

Ralbag, who lives in New York and visits the Netherlands once or twice a year to rule on legal matters, signed the Declaration On The Torah Approach To Homosexuality using all his official functions, including that of chief rabbi of Amsterdam.

Farewell Janey

WE have just learned of the death this week in Brighton of veteran gay rights campaigner, Janey Buchan, 85.

An email we received today from ScotsGay’s John Hein said of the ex-Labour MEP:

She was inspiring to and influential in the LGBT movement in Scotland in the dark years between decriminalisation of gay male sex in England/Wales in 1967 and its eventual decriminalisation in Scotland in 1980.

THE UK website Totaljobs.com is a very useful resource for people in search of employment – but it really ought to be a great deal more careful with the ads it accepts.

Yesterday, our attention was brought to an ad it is running for a company in Sussex called Amtechnica Ltd which appears to be in gross violation of the Equality Act, 2010.

ATHEIST writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr once created a character, allegedly based on Hemingway, for his play Happy Birthday, Wanda June. In it, the sexist buffoon Harold comes out with the following line:

Educating a beautiful woman is like pouring honey into a fine Swiss watch. Everything stops.

I burst out laughing when I first read that quote way back in the early 1970s … and spent several guilty hours after regretting my mirth. But then I decided to adapt it to suit my own worldview:

Religiously educating a person is like pouring honey into a fine Swiss watch …

IN A “State of the World” address, Pope Benedict the something-or-other has warned that the future of humanity is threatened by gay marriage.

Pink bin fury

ZIMBABWE’S Roman Catholic President, a serial human rights abuser and who harbours a deep hatred of homosexuals, is apparently deeply upset by the appearance in Bulawayo of a bunch of pink garbage cans.

Donated to the Bulawayo council by lesbian and gay pressure group, the Sexual Rights Centre, the bins have caused a storm among Zimbabwean homophobes, chief among them being the ghastly tyrant Mugabe, who seems not averse to a touch of pink in his wardrobe, as the picture indicates. (See a video here).

Meet Margaret Court, Christian fopdoodle

By  •  Global news

THIS week I came across a word I had never heard before: “fopdoodle”. It is an old English term – defined here as “A stupid or insignificant fellow; a fool; a simpleton” – and, within hours I found someone to apply it to: a 69-year-old Australian called Margaret Court who belongs to that school of imbeciles who believe that being gay is “a lifestyle choice”.

According to this report, Court, a one-time world champion tennis star and now a Christian minister, prompted a row with other former champions after saying gays were “aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take”.

George Michael slams Christian hate group

By  •  Global news

A FUNDAMENTALIST Christian hate-group, which called on its followers to pray for the death of the singer George Michael, is running a poll which asks why “Atheists cyber-bully Christians”.

“This”, according to The Freethinker today, “is rich, given the behaviour of Christians for a Moral America, which aggressively employs cyber-bullying tactics against those it disapproves of. And The Gays are top of their list.”

HUNGARY has a new constitution, and “it mirrors many of the things that the Reactionary Right want to enshrine in the United States”, writes Bridgette P LaVictoire on the LezGetReal blog.

The new constitution bans same-sex marriage, does not protect LGBT people or the aged from discrimination, basically bans abortions by granting rights to foetuses from conception onward, and has removed many of the legal protections designed to prevent rampant economic corruption.

Turing honour welcomed

THE Guardian reports today that Alan Turing, the mathematician and second world war codebreaker, is to be celebrated on a special stamp as an online petition calls for a posthumous pardon to quash his conviction for gross indecency.

The e-petition says his treatment and death:

Remains a shame on the UK government and UK history.

The computer pioneer is one of 10 prominent people chosen for the Royal Mail’s Britons of Distinction stamps, to be launched in February.
