GAY Humanists have described the appointment of the present Bishop of Durham, Justin Welby, as the new Archbishop of Canterbury as “a retrograde step” as far as LGBT rights are concerned.
The Bishop is part of the evangelical wing of the Church upholding a traditional conservative interpretation of the Bible. He has spoken out firmly against gay marriage and is opposed to gay people serving as bishops.
SOME imbecile working for Channel 4 TV thought that viewers would choke on their Sunday lunch if they were to hear the word “gay”.
So the “compliant checker” – newspeak for censor – editing the word out of a weekend repeat of The Simpsons. The line was cut from a 1994 episode, called Homer Loves Flanders, which was aired at 12.55pm on Sunday.
GOOD news all round. Not only has Obama won a second term as President, Wisconsin has elected the first openly homosexual member of the US Senate.
Tammy Baldwin, 50, had been running as a Democrat against Republican challenger Tommy Thompson, 70, who formerly served as governor of the state.
She first held office as a state representative in 1998, and is stated to have kept her sexuality in the shadows for the most part.
ALTHOUGH Spain legalised marriage equality in 2005, homophobic forces in the country – the Catholic Church in particular – never accepted the law, and mounted a series of legal challeges, claiming first that marriage equality was “unconstitutional” and later that gays deserved legal rights but shouldn’t call it “marriage.”
But today gay marriage opponents were finally seen off when the Spanish Constitutional Court ruled that the seven year old law is fully legal.
IN THE midst of his fight to become re-elected, President Barack Obama took time off to respond positively to a touching letter he received last week from a 10-year-old girl, who wrote about her “two dads”.
Sophia Bailey Klugh told the President how happy she is that he agrees with her on the topic of marriage equality. She went on to ask the president an important question:
I am so glad that you agree two men can love each other because I have two dads and they love each other, but at school kids think that it’s gross and weird, but it really hurts my heart and feelings … If you were me and you had two dads that loved each other and kids at school teased you about it, what would you do?
A SPOKESMAN for France’s governing Socialist Party, David Assouline, said at the weekend that was not the Church’s role:
To oppose the will of the legislature, especially concerning civil marriage in a secular republic.
According to this report, the party hit back hard at the Roman Catholic Church for campaigning against its plan to legalise same-sex marriage.
A STATE Visit last week to the UK of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who reportedly planned in September to push for an international UN protocol against “blasphemy”, was marked by the outrageous arrest of gay humanist Peter Tatchell who had the temerity to unfurl a West Papuan flag.
Writing for the Huffington Post, Tatchell said:
TERRY SANDERSON, President of the National Secular Society, yesterday issued a statement in support of the LGBT rights group Stonewall for naming Cardinal Keith O’Brien Bigot of Year.
Sanderson pointed out that Stonewall is under mounting attack for bestowing the award on O’Brien, and that:
Politicians – such as Alec Salmond – who are petrified of upsetting the church lest it ends up costing votes, are rushing to his defence.
THE leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland was last night named Bigot of the Year by gay rights charity Stonewall because of his opposition to gay marriage.
In the run-up to the award ceremony, sponsors Barclays and Coutts banks warned they would axe their funding if the category is not dropped next year.
Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson won Politician of the Year, but was booed for also criticising the bigot award.
A RABBI has joined an extremist Christian preacher in blaming Hurricane Sandy on gays, calling devastation of New York “divine justice” for the city’s same-sex marriage laws.
According to this report, Rabbi Noson Leiter of Torah Jews for Decency compared the superstorm which swept across the US eastern coast this week to a biblical disaster.
We believe that the great flood at the time of Noah…[was] triggered by the recognition of same-gender marriages.
