About Barry Duke

Veteran journalist Barry Duke, born in South Africa in 1947, settled in the UK in 1973, where he became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement and gay rights organisations. A militant atheist, he joined the National Secular Society (NSS) and was a co-founder in 1979 of the Gay Humanist Group which changed its name to the Gay & Lesbian Humanist Association in 1987. In 2017 he was handed a Lifetime Achievement award by the NSS for his "spirited opposition to religious intolerance and irrationality" in his roles as a free speech advocate and his work as editor of the Freethinker and The Pink Humanist magazines. In 2017 he was married to his partner of 22 years, Marcus Robinson, in Gibraltar. The couple live in Benidorm, Spain.

BRITAIN’S Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has pledged to introduce marriage equality and has confirmed that the UK’s coalition government will legislate for it by 2015.

Confirmation came in a letter to British Quakers. In it Clegg said:

A SHOCKING report due to be released tomorrow by Stonewall Scotland indicates that schools are doing little to combat homophobia.

Stonewall’s investigation is the first-ever study the lives of lesbian, gay and bisexual schoolchildren in Scotland.

Colin Macfarlane, Director of Stonewall Scotland, told the Sunday Herald:

The report shows the stark reality of the situation in our schools today. It is very worrying that only 11 percent of our respondents hear their teacher repeatedly challenge homophobic bullying when they encounter it. There is clearly a major issue in Scottish schools about tackling homophobia.
